In order to grow tomatoes in a cool season, sufficient knowledge and effort is required. Contrary to popular belief, growing tomatoes in a greenhouse in winter is not an impossible situation. Growing tomatoes in the greenhouse in winter consists of four main stages. These; Before the frost, a winter greenhouse should be built, heating and plumbing should be introduced, the ventilation system should be reduced and adjusted, and tomato varieties that can grow in winter should be learned.
For this reason, it is necessary to build the greenhouse initially for growing tomatoes in the greenhouse. First of all, the pollutants remaining in the tomato seed planting areas must be cleaned from the inside of the flow area. In addition, necessary steps should be taken for the construction of many processes such as heating, lighting and plumbing before the saplings are properly planted.
If vegetables are grown in the greenhouse before, the soil must be washed. This washing process is done by using demi and copper sulfate solution. Then, less than 20 cm of ground should be excavated. It is necessary to introduce 1-2 parts of the compost per 1 square meter. However, if cucumbers have been grown in the same greenhouse before, there is no need to add turbo compost. Instead of compost, it would be more appropriate to give 1 piece to 1 square meter of ground sphagnum manure or sawdust.
2 days before the tomato seedlings are planted in the greenhouse, the soil should be watered abundantly and at a depth of at least 15 cm. After this process, the greenhouse needs to be warmed up. When the greenhouse is prepared, variety selection should be started. To do this, information must first be obtained about which tomatoes can be grown when growing tomatoes in the greenhouse in winter. Not all tomato varieties are suitable for greenhouse production, nor are they suitable for greenhouse production in winter. They should also have good taste and should also be productive. It is also necessary to choose varieties that guarantee a good harvest.
In order for tomatoes to be grown in winter, seedlings must be grown from the end of September to the end of November. The seedlings are kept in one place continuously until January. The seedlings are watered with hot water and the temperature of the environment they are in should be 20-22°C. Humidity should be in the range of 65 – 70%.
After the emergence of 5-6 leaves, the greenhouse temperature should be 6-7 ° C. Humidity should be reduced to approximately 60-65°C. The temperature in the greenhouse should be increased gradually. This is necessary in order not to cause a temperature shock during the cultivation of tomatoes in the greenhouse in winter, during which seed sowing will be delayed.
